THINGS TO DO & SEE in and around Corbridge Corbridge village was founded in Roman times and Corstopitum
Roman site and museum is now just outside the centre of the village.
Today the village centre streets are laid out much the same as they
were in medieval times, when Roman stones were used to construct many of
the churches, shops and houses. A
short stroll through the village brings you to the magnificent 17th
century bridge that spans the River Tyne.
There are delightful walks along the river bank on both sides of
the river and the maps & guide books in the cottage will help you easily
identify many short, medium or longer walks through the village and the
beautiful surrounding countryside. There
is a railway station a short way out of the village, from where local
trains run up and down the Tyne Valley, to Newcastle & Hexham.
There are
100’s of great things to do and see locally, ranging from Hadrian’s
Wall and many fascinating Roman sites (Chesters, Housesteads, Vindolanda),
Castles (Aydon, Prudhoe, Belsay, Alnwick, Newcastle), Abbeys (Hexham,
Durham), stately homes & gardens (Alnwick, Wallington Hall, Cragside, Belsay ),
visitor attractions (Beamish Museum, Centre for Life, The Sage
Gateshead), forests (Slaley, Kielder, Simonside), Shopping Centres (Metro Centre,
Newcastle Eldon Square), and golfers have many excellent courses nearby (Slaley, Hexham
& Matfen). The
Northumberland Coastline is easily accessible with a fabulous drive though
Northumberland to reach Alnwick and its splendid castle and the now world
famous Alnwick gardens. A
short drive from there takes you to our favourite “secret” beach,
appropriately called Sugar Sands. Corbridge has many great quality pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. There are a wide selection of country pubs, serving good food and ales in the area. And Slaley Hall is a few miles south, where there are many leisure facilties and dinning opportunities. Sandy would be delighted to advise you on great things to do, see and experience in the area. Or you could visit the Tourist Information Office which is just 100 yards away in Corbridge village centre.
